We’re a young tech company improving the way South Africans buy and sell property. Established in 2016 by our founders Crispin Inglis and Ashley James, investors Andrew Johnston, Jesse Hemson-Struthers and David Gibbons. PropertyFox has reexplored the real estate landscape in South Africa (SA) with a view to offer a more affordable and professional alternative to what South Africans have become used to!
Property sale commission rates in South Africa have hovered between 5-7% for a long time which is generally considered to be quite high by international standards. So we decided to embrace tech advancements and have redesigned the sales model to a point where we are able to offer sellers the opportunity to sell for as little as 1.5%commission on transfer. While we appreciate that some people are still happy with the traditional methods of buying and selling we believe there is a big market out there waiting for a less-expensive alternative with better and more consistent service delivery to each individual client.
What makes us special is that while we offer a substantial saving on sale costs, our business structure allows us to continually invest in the individual elements of the sales process. For example, our photographers are all professional freelance photographers allowing us to showcase homes professionally. Our pre-sales team are all experienced marketing gurus whose core focus is on giving your home the best possible exposure while our post sales team have an intricate understanding of our purchase agreements and negotiations.
Neither of our founders are new to the SA business climate – Ashley is a young entrepreneur whose early days were kept busy by starting a successful online sushi business that he built from scratch and eventually sold. Crispin completed his MBA at UCT and Cornell University then spent two years working for a property investment firm before Ashley and he settled on PropertyFox.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love optimizing internal systems, creating efficiencies in the model. I love testing and going against the norm.

What do you hope your interns will get out of this experience?
Experience in a fast-paced start-up. Looking at all aspects of a business trying to change the real estate game in South Africa.
Young Capetonian Ashley James has a colorful string of qualifications under his belt. After completing matric he became a qualified ATC (Air Traffic Controller), acquiring an Aerodrome license before going on to do a 3-year Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Financial Management. Always finding interest in the financial markets, he attended stock and forex courses that educated him to trade in his personal capacity when he had the chance.
With this knowledge and passion, he entertained his entrepreneurial skills by conceptualizing and co-founding OishiSushi.co.za in his first year of varsity. OishiSushi is a Cape Town based sushi delivery service – with an innovative edge – offering online ordering and card payment options upon delivery. This inaugural entrepreneurial experience was an invaluable crash course in running a business. Through his learnings and experiences, he managed to grow the brand successfully over 2,5 years before selling his equity stake in the 3 branches to coincide with completing his degree.
Juggling a full-time business and the added pressures of a degree was a challenge, but he managed to execute them both successfully. Ashley continues to ride the successful business wave and has now moved into the online space, with a new innovative way to sell property, called PropertyFox.
PropertyFox is a new innovative tech company which offers the full bouquet of estate agency services from expert valuations, professional photography, floor plans, negotiations and full management of the sale to completion. In addition, it does so at a fraction of the price. Effectively what they do is to use technology to increase efficiencies in the business allowing sellers to get more out of there hard earned investments. They have partnered with innovative companies like thisisme.com to add a safe aspect to their process flow allowing vetting on all potential buyers viewing someone’s property.
Being an entrepreneur takes guts and gusto, and this extremely driven, passionate and well-balanced 23 year old, is certainly going places.
